Smarter Confectionery Coding with the LINX 9900

When Every Pack Needs the Right Code — and Every Code Needs to Be Right

In confectionery production, the product may be colourful, fun and designed to catch the consumer's attention — but behind every packet, pouch and container is a serious requirement for accurate product identification and traceability.

Best-before dates, batch numbers, production times, traceability information and machine-readable codes all play an important role in getting confectionery products from the production line to the consumer with confidence.

The LINX 9900 Continuous Inkjet (CIJ) Printer brings coding, production flexibility and automated verification together in one intelligent solution.

Coding That Keeps Up with Confectionery Production

Confectionery manufacturers often work with a wide variety of packaging formats.

One production line may be filling clear plastic tubs with jelly sweets, while another is producing bags of gummies, chocolates, hard sweets or individually wrapped confectionery.

This is where CIJ technology becomes particularly valuable.

The LINX 9900 can apply variable information including:

  • Best-before and expiry dates
  • Batch and lot numbers
  • Production times
  • Sequential numbering
  • Text and symbols
  • Barcodes
  • Data Matrix codes
  • QR codes

Because CIJ is a non-contact printing technology, the printhead does not need to physically touch the packaging to create the code. This makes it well suited to fast-moving production environments and different packaging shapes and materials.

Whether you're coding onto a plastic confectionery container or flexible sweet packet, the objective remains the same:

Put the right information onto every product, clearly and consistently, without unnecessarily slowing production.

Built for Production Lines That Change

Not every confectionery factory dedicates one printer permanently to one production line.

A manufacturer may finish a run of jelly sweets on one line and then need the coder somewhere else for another product.

Normally, moving a CIJ printer creates an operational inconvenience. Disconnecting power means shutting the printer down correctly, moving it, reconnecting it and waiting for it to become production-ready again.

The LINX 9900 addresses this with the Linx PrintProtect® rechargeable battery, fitted as standard on the LINX 9900.

During a line change, PrintProtect can keep the jet running on battery power for up to nine minutes, allowing operators to disconnect the printer, move it to another production line and reconnect the power without going through a complete shutdown and restart cycle.

For a busy confectionery facility running multiple products and packaging formats, that is more than convenience.

It turns the printer into a genuinely mobile production asset.

The battery also provides protection during unexpected power interruptions. LINX states that printing can continue for up to three minutes; if power is not restored, the system can perform its shutdown routine rather than simply losing power abruptly.

But Printing the Code Is Only Half the Job

There is another question manufacturers should be asking:

How do you know the code was actually printed correctly?

Traditionally, an operator might periodically inspect products coming off the line.

The problem is that checking occasional samples cannot provide the same assurance as checking every individual code.

This is where the optional Linx Iris® Vision System changes the conversation.

The LINX 9900 Series is designed to integrate with Linx Iris, allowing the vision camera to inspect the printed code immediately after it has been applied.

Instead of simply assuming that because the printer received the message everything must be correct, Iris checks the actual printed result.

It can verify factors including:

Code presence.

Was a code actually printed?

Readability.

Can the printed information be read?

Position.

Has the code appeared where it is supposed to appear?

Print quality.Does the code meet the defined acceptance criteria?

The system compares the printed result with the message information received from the printer, helping identify missing, incomplete, misplaced or unreadable codes in real time.

Print. Inspect. Verify.

Imagine thousands of clear sweet containers travelling down a production line.

The LINX 9900 applies the required batch and best-before information.

Immediately afterwards, the Linx Iris camera looks at that code.

Product arrives → Code is printed → Code is inspected → Result is verified → Product continues

That creates an additional layer of automated quality control directly at the point where the code is being produced.

Instead of discovering a coding problem further downstream — after hundreds or thousands of products may already have been packed — the objective is to identify the problem where it happens.

That can help manufacturers reduce rework, unnecessary waste and the risk of incorrectly coded products progressing further through production.

More Than a Printer

This is what makes the LINX 9900 particularly interesting for modern confectionery manufacturing.

It isn't simply about putting black characters onto a packet of sweets.

It's about building a smarter coding process around the production line.

The LINX 9900 prints the information.

PrintProtect helps maintain mobility and continuity when the printer needs to move.

Linx Iris helps verify that the printed information is actually there and meets the required standard.

Together, these technologies help transform coding from a small task at the end of production into an integrated part of traceability, quality control and production efficiency.

For confectionery manufacturers producing multiple products, packaging formats and batches every day, that can make a significant difference.

Sweet Products. Serious Traceability.

Consumers may only see the sweets inside the container.

Manufacturers need to see everything behind them.

The batch. The date. The production run. The traceability information. And the confidence that the information has been printed correctly.

With the LINX 9900 CIJ Printer, PrintProtect® battery technology and optional Linx Iris® vision inspection, manufacturers can combine flexible coding with automated verification in a solution designed around the realities of modern production.
